Colon Hydrotherapy (Colonics) Treatment
What is Colon Hydrotherapy (Colonics)?
Colon Hydrotherapy, or otherwise simply known as Colonics is the removal of toxins and waste that have collected in the colon, by the introduction of warm water through the rectum. Colon hydrotherapy works with your body, helping to return your digestive system to a more natural, healthy state. The gentle flow of water firstly it cleans out waste matter in the colon, and then it stimulates the natural nerve and muscle action of the bowels to encourage proper bowel function and elimination.
Without a clean and healthy colon, you may be susceptible to chronic or occasional constipation, digestive issues, fatigue, and other potential health concerns. As well, colonics is a very effective method to cleanse your colon, and colon hydrotherapy is the only therapy that is proven to eliminate toxic residue that has lodged itself into the internal walls of the colon.
It may seem a little strange at first, but the more you learn about the treatment and its many benefits, the more you’ll see that it is a very normal and natural way to take care of your health and wellbeing. It is a completely natural treatment that is enjoyed by thousands of people every day, from celebrities and film stars to ordinary people of all ages, from all walks of life.
Unlike an enema, colon hydrotherapy, can reach the full length of the large intestine, ensuring a thorough cleanse and the maximum benefit.
Many of us would love to eat healthier or exercise more. Poor food ingredients and lack of exercise among other things can upset the natural way your digestive system works, leading to a range of negative effects on your health, from digestion and bowel problems, to fatigue, headaches and more.
An age-old treatment
Many ancient civilizations from the Egyptians and Greeks to the traditional Chinese and Indians practiced inner cleansing. Each of these cultures realized the many health and wellbeing benefits of this natural treatment, and the fact that it has endured for so long, and has spread so widely, is a testament to its effectiveness.
It wasn’t until the turn of the 20th century, that we start to see the present day colonic equipment. Back then many doctors had colonic systems in their surgeries and similar equipment was found in hospitals too. Articles dealing with colon health frequently appeared in prestigious medical and scientific journals until the early 1930’s. Today, hospitals have largely replaced colonics with cheaper purgatives and laxatives, although some people find these unpleasant and ineffective and not without side effects.
Benefits
People have colon hydrotherapy for a wide range of reasons. Some are looking for relief from the symptoms of IBS and other gastro-intestinal problems such as bloating, constipation or diarrhea, while others simply want to maintain and improve their digestive health and enjoy the fresh, light feeling and enhanced energy levels that often comes from the treatment.
Colon Hydrotherapy gives many people a sensation of overall well-being and energy and it’s often the inspiration for a healthier diet and lifestyle all round.
What’s more, since your digestive system is closely linked with the rest of your body’s functions, the therapy may also help you with headaches, allergies and acne, and improve mental and physical sluggishness. And when you feel good on the inside, it shows on the outside, bringing out your natural beauty through clearer skin and brighter eyes.

Prior to Your Appointment
All appointments must be booked in advance. Your first appointment will be approximately 1 hour long and follow-up sessions will be around 45 minutes.
We recommend that no food be consumed 2 hours before your colonic session. Plenty of water, electrolytes and raw vegetable juices are great for hydrating and softening fecal matter. We also recommend avoiding processed food, large meals, alcohol, red meat, caffeine and refined sugars 24 hours prior to your colonic session.
YOU MUST NOTIFY US PRIOR TO YOUR APPOINTMENT IF YOU HAVE HAD ANY OF THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS WITHIN THE LAST 6-12 MONTHS as anyone who does not pass the contraindications (requirements) which is indicated in our confidential intake form won’t be able to proceed with the treatment.
Heart failure, Renal failure, Intestinal perforation, carcinoma of the rectum, fissures or fistula, severe hemorrhoids, Colon or rectal surgery, abdominal hernia, first & last trimester of pregnancy, Liver cirrhosis, Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative colitis, Diverticulitis.
What to Expect on Your First Treatment
Your therapist will review your confidential intake form with you and explain the details of the process.
We use a state of the art Angel of Water “Open System” creating a very private and comfortable experience.
The process is painless, and most clients find it to be quite comfortable. The water is just around body temperature, and a safe and gentle pressure level.
The purified water is entered through the body using a disposable nozzle about the size of a pencil. As the water circulates through the colon, you will feel some light pressure building up until you feel the urge to go to the washroom. When you feel the natural urge to go, you simply release as normal. The water, along with any waste and gases, will ‘swoosh’ out of your body, and drain into the plumbing system, with no odour, mess or fuss. During a sufficient session of 35-45 minutes, a person may have between 30-40 bowel movements.
We generally recommend at least 3-4 sessions to cleanse the entire length of the colon, however, the number may vary depending on the digestive condition.
Before leaving the clinic, your therapist will consult with you explaining how to take care of yourself after your session. The therapist will also provide you with individualized recommendations and answer any questions or concerns you may have.
After the session most people experience a feeling of improved energy. You may go back to work, or your regular routine after the session is over.
Our Equipment
The Angel of Water. Is a FDA and Health Canada approved device and classified as an “open System”
This state-of-the-art system is equipped with both a UV and activated carbon filtration system.
The other type of system which we don’t use is called the closed system and both types bring water into the colon.
During an open-system session, the water flows automatically at a constant pressure of 1 psi. The water is gravity driven and flows from a gravity tank located at the end of the unit. Due to the constant yet gentle flow of the water, generally 35-40 minutes is sufficient.
The disposable speculum used in open-system is much thinner as it is only about pencil size. Although it can be up to 10 inches long, only 1.5-2 inches is self-inserted into the rectum. The unit and equipment are designed so that the client can self administer the session painlessly with ease. Tubing is used to connect the speculum to the unit where the water flows. There is a basin located in the middle of the unit with a drain in the bottom. This where the client will release into and waste will travel down the drain into the sewer system underneath the basin. Although, the waste is “open” to air, the unit is designed as a vented system to ensure no odor or mess.
Due to the larger tubing and plumbing used in open-system, there is no need for additional abdominal massage because larger amounts of stool are able to pass through the system sufficiently.
The tank is filled with hot and cold water controlled by a water mixing valve on the basin right topside. The proper temperature of the water falls between 99 -103 degrees F and is monitored by the temperature gauge visible on the front of the tower cabinet. If at any time the water rises above 103 degrees Fahrenheit, the temperature sensor will trigger the flow valve to shut off, stopping water flow to the client.
After the client has comfortably positioned themselves on the basin (with the pillow and cushioned backrest in place) and inserted the nozzle into the rectum, water flow can be activated by turning ON the FLOW switch. Water flow can be stopped at any time by simply turning the FLOW switch OFF. The tank line to the basin nipple has a backflow prevention valve as a permanent plumbing safety feature. It is located underneath the fiberglass basin and is connected directly to the basin nipple through an opening in the basin wall. It prevents water from flowing back into the line once it has passed through the basin nipple into the nozzle and into the client’s rectum.
The system utilizes the controlled pressure created by gravity as water exits the elevated tank in the tower cabinet as activated by the FLOW switch. The procedure can be stopped at any time by simply turning off the FLOW switch to stop the gravity-fed stream of water or by the person simply sliding back off the nozzle and resting on the basin.
A typical colon irrigation session lasts approximately 30-40 minutes and uses approximately 8 gallons of water, which is the total volume capacity of the main tank. Usually, only one tank full of water is needed. At the end of the session, all three switches (U.V., CYCLE, FLOW) are turned OFF and the client slides back off the nozzle so that it naturally drops away from the body. The client can now drain comfortably on the ergonomic basin, sitting up erect or leaning back in a lounge position to fully drain the colon. After this is done, the client can rinse off using the basin sprayer and its control valve located on the basin left topside. Tempered water is delivered to the sprayer by the same water mixing valve on the right topside of the basin that also sends water to the system tank. The client can then towel dry before dressing and leaving the privacy of the colon irrigation room.

After a colonic, you can continue with your normal daily routine, including eating and drinking. However, you should avoid any foods that you know irritate or upset your stomach and try to avoid alcohol. Now that you’ve cleansed yourself its probably a good idea to put the “right” foods back inside of you. We offer customized nutritional coaching plans. Inquire for more details.
The session itself typically takes about 45 minutes, so with changing time, you’ll need to allow at least an hour. Your first treatment will normally take longer as your therapist will need to go over your medical history and assess your current bowel health before starting.
Most of the important bowel bacteria are present on the bowel wall and are not removed during colon hydrotherapy tretments. Good bacteria breed best in a balanced environment, therefore a colonic cleanse may actually improve their environment and help increase or rebalance their numbers. If your therapist thinks that your bowel bacteria may be out of balance, they may suggest a pro-biotic after your treatment.
Generally speaking as soon as your treatment is completed you can carry on with your normal routine. You may experience an increase in bowel movements over the first few hours, to eliminate any remaining water or waste. This is perfectly normal and shouldn’t involve any undue urgency or discomfort. After that you may find that you don’t need to go to the toilet for a while, perhaps as long as a few days, as your bowels have been emptied.
Everyone is different and colonics help some people more than others. We do not make any promises or wild claims for our treatments. The best way to find out if they will benefit you is to book a treatment and see for yourself.
Your safety is our number 1 priority. The Angel of Water maintains the water temperature and pressure within safe limits, and a new, single use, disposable speculum is used for each treatment.
None whatsoever. The angel of water system is designed to minimize both mess and smell. If an accident does occur there is a hand held shower head, as well as towels nearby. The waste goes directly into the sewer to minimize any smells.
Not at all. Your therapy will take place in a private treatment room and a trained therapist who understands the sensitivity of the procedure will be nearby at all times. The Angel of Water “Open System” allow the client to insert their own tube you’ll remain covered and in your own privacy for the rest of the treatment.
If you are constipated, and have any additional concerns you should ask your therapist for advice on what you can do beforehand to maximize the benefits of your treatment.
Avoiding Alcohol and staying hydrated is highly recommended. We recommend refraining from eating and caffeine about two hours before the session. We also suggest drinking 8-10 glasses of water, eat primarily vegetables, fruits and grains the day before the session.
No, being on your menstrual period does not have an effect, it is actually considered to be a good time to cleanse, as your body is naturally cleansing. Your time of the month will have no effect on the outcome of the session.
The Angel of Water system uses a single-use, sterile rectal nozzles. The use of sterile disposables coupled with the implementation of the Angel of Water’s multi-stage sanitation protocol with EPA registered disinfectants leaves no danger of contamination.
Anyone who does not pass the contraindications (requirements) which is indicated in our confidential intake form.
If you had the following conditions within the last 6 months; congestive heart failure, intestinal perforation, carcinoma of the rectum, fissures or fistula, severe hemorrhoids, renal insufficiency, colon or rectal surgery, abdominal hernia, pregnancy, cirrhosis.
We all know that everyone is different. There are many factors to consider including your reason for having a colonic in the first place, as well as how successful the treatment was. Your therapist will advise you on whether you need further treatments, as well as when and how often you need to return.
Most people find the procedure to be quite relaxing, with no discomfort. The colon fills and empties regularly as part of its normal function, so the treatment is nothing new. You may feel varying sensations of fullness and movement in your abdomen throughout the treatment. Colon Hydrotherapy is usually not painful at all.
It may feel a little strange as the small tube is inserted, and you may have a natural urge to squeeze it out again, but this passes quickly. Occasionally the colon may contract during the treatment, giving a cramping sensation but this is easily tolerated and passes as soon as the bowel empties again.
An enema is limited in its reach, as it can only cleanse out the lower part of the colon and the rectum. Hydrotherapy can accomplish a much deeper cleanse reaching the rectum and the entirety of the colon.
“One colon irrigation is equivalent to 30 enemas.” – Dr. Norman Walker
Most people feel amazing after a colonic. Many have reported an increase in energy and vitality. Occasionally some clients may feel a little under the weather for about 24 hours. If you have any concerns, or you feel unwell, speak to your therapist who will be able to explain your body’s reactions to you.
Yes. A colonic or Colon Hydrotherapy is much safer and easier than the common enema.
In an open-system session, the water flows automatically at a constant pressure of 1 psi. The water is gravity driven and flows from a gravity tank located at the end of the unit. Due to the constant yet gentle flow of the water, generally 35-40 minutes is sufficient.
The disposable tube (speculum) used in the open-system is much thinner than in the closed as it is only about pencil size. Although it can be up to 10 inches long, only a small portion of about 1.5-2 inches is self-inserted into the rectum.
The Angel of Water system and most open systems are designed so that the client can self administer the session painlessly and easily. Tubing is used to connect the speculum to the unit where the water flows. There is a basin located in the middle of the unit, which the client sits over with a drain in the bottom. This where the client will release into and waste will travel down the drain into the sewer system underneath the unit. Although, the waste is “open” to air, the unit is designed as a vented system to ensure no odor or mess.
Due the larger tubing and plumbing used in open-system, there is no need for additional abdominal massage because larger amounts of stool are able to pass through the system sufficiently whereas in a closed system usually there needs to be someone to assist and massage when required.
Open systems allow you to evacuate up to 5x more fecal matter and waste in a single session than closed systems.
Although both systems have been proven to work well, our open system allows our clients to enjoy their privacy, while getting a more efficient cleanse. We believe the Angel of Water is the best unit on the market and why we chose to use it in our studio.
Colon Hydrotherapy, also called Colonics is simply the removal of toxins and waste that have collected in the colon, by the introduction of warm water through the rectum. The water cleans the colon by flowing into the colon, and flushing back out, carrying waste and toxins with it.
Colonics is important as without a clean and healthy colon, you can be susceptible to chronic or occasional constipation, fatigue, digestive issues, and other health concerns. As well, colonics is a highly effective method to cleanse your colon, and colon hydrotherapy is the only therapy that is proven to eliminate toxic residue that has buried itself into the internal walls of the colon.
